Biking: Trimley Marshes Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: 16.70 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 14.85 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Thursday 3rd June - bike ***** - Trimley Marshes and home via Levington Marina – sunny periods and hot. With the breezes of the last few days gone and another hot day here on the East coast we were keen to get out on the bikes, it’s been nearly a month for me since I have been in the saddle! We are not keen to be cycling in the heat of the day so decided to get out fairly early taking our breakfast with us. We had heard there are a pair of Long Legged Stilts on the Suffolk Wildlife Reserve at Trimley Marshes so decided to head there. After another hot night we sleep with the windows open and not for the first time Felixstowe docks was particularly noisy so we were awake at 6 but laid in for a bit before packing breakfast actually leaving home at 8 0 clock and it was pretty cloudy after days of wall to wall sunshine, making it pleasant to cycle in:) We took mainly footpaths past the cemetery, then the Academy with our favourite at this time of year, cow parsley growing well everywhere now:) Lifting our bikes over a gate on Trimley High road to skirt the new massive gun around Felixstowe docks to the lane leading to Trimley Reserve spotting several deer, mostly just seeing their head as they were laying in the wheat! First spot the open air hide up the steps where we actually enjoy our breakfast, Weetabix and fruit while watching the wildlife and lovely scenery:) A pair of marsh harriers gave us an amazing display as well as flying swans including one black one plus a great herd of cattle including an impressive bull and several calf’s:) We sit watching the world go by enjoying the peace and quiet before carrying on visiting each bird hide in turn having the whole reserve pretty much all to ourselves. We see loads of birds with avocets being the highlight, check out the full list of birds spotted below! The tide was low on the River Orwell and there were several boats out and about enjoying the warm weather including a couple of barges, a sailing one and a motorised one! Following the river path around the creek, along the cliffs with one of the best views in Suffolk straight up the Orwell where we meet some friends and stop for a chat. Past Loompit lake spotting a swan with cygnets:) Then we stop at Levington Marina picnic area for a cuppa as the sun stats to come out, really warming up! A quick spin around the marina where we spot some big mullet, chat to windsurfing mate Jamie before starting the six miles home! Taking nearly all footpaths with next to no one about, just perfect. Getting home knackered after being out for 5 hours 40 minutes covering nearly 15 miles enjoying the best that Suffolk has to offer:) A yummy sandwich in the garden, a doze in the sun, then feeling invigorated I do my exercises in the sunshine! Could be some rain tomorrow which would be good for the garden which is coming into bloom nicely now, well done Mag, she is a top gardener :) Today’s bird list. Marsh harrier, swan, black swan, cygnets, grey lag geese, brent geese, pigeon, heron, mallard, blackbird, crow, lapwing, sky lark, coot, cormorant, assorted gulls, shoveller, tufted ducks, pochard, reed bunting, egret, oyster catcher, wagtail, avocet, shelduck, sparrow, godwits, robin.
